Tuhi Mai, Tuhi Atu, Back in Time

Last week, we went to Shantytown to learn about the olden days.

First, we got to dress up in olden day clothes. The girls wore long dresses and skirts, an apron and a bonnet hat. The boys wore shorts, shirts, waistcoats and a cheese cutter cap. We felt really hot in those clothes.

Next, we learned about how the Maori came to get pounamu, a precious stone. We also learned about the gold rush and how all the people came to prospect for gold.

After that, we did some shopping activities and had to go to Chinatown for our fresh vegetables.

At lunchtime, we got to play with toys like, stilts and wooden horses and a horseshoe game like the ones from Victorian times.

Our favourite thing was riding the steam train to the gold panning site and panning for our very own gold.
 We had heaps of fun.

  2. Kia ora,
We are Room 26 at Pt England School and we are your tuhi mai tuhi atu buddies. We love the gold panning and we would love to dig for gold. We also think you were all wearing cool clothes. We went on a school trip to the beach, we played in the sand and water. We enjoyed having a picnic with everyone including our famillies. Do you have a school uniform ? How many children go to your school? Do you have a TV for your learning? or ipads? Do you have a garden?

    Ka kite!
