Matariki

We have been learning about Matariki and its significance to us in Aotearoa New Zealand. We have been listening to and learning about the different stories about Matariki and how the stars are used and valued in different ways.

We shared the book 'Flit the Fantail and the Matariki Map' by Kat Quin. Flit the piwakawaka, with her friend Keri the Kiwi, used the Matariki whetū (stars) to guide them home when they were lost.

Flit pecked holes in a kawakawa leaf as a map to find their way using the Matariki whetū to guide them home.

We pecked holes in a kawakawa leaf and looked at the Matariki stars through our 'map'.

Patterns and shapes

We have been having some fun in Rūma Piwakawaka exploring patterns, shapes and colours.

Here is some examples of the mahi we have been doing.
