Rūma Pīwakawaka's big day out at 'The Kiwi Centre"

Rūma Pīwakawaka had a fantastic day at the 'Kiwi Centre'. Our main reason for visiting was because we have been learning about our native Tuna . We were very excited (and a little nervous) as we each got to get up close and feed the Tuna a piece of meat with a pair of tongs. We also found out some interesting facts and information about Tuna from our knowledgeable guide, building on our current knowledge about Tuna. We saw the Kiwi being fed, observed various animals native to Aotearoa and had a lot of fun catching and releasing crawlies. A big thank you to the parents who came along to allow this action packed morning to happen.

Piwakawaka have been busy in the school garden!

At the end of term 2 Piwakawaka were learning about Matariki and the nine stars that make up the cluster. We have been focusing on the stars connection and responsibility for kai. The star 'Tupānuki' is responsible for foods that grow below the ground so we prepared one of the garden beds and planted garlic. We had a lot of fun and look forward to harvest time so we can make some garlic bread to spread on some rolls for our lunch!

Piwakawaka have been learning about length

Dear family and whānau,

For the last two weeks in Piwakawaka we have been exploring activities which develop an awareness of length and area. We have been using words like: long, short, tall, big and small to describe objects.

Longs and Shorts

Ask your child to look around at home and find objects that are short and long. Once they have a collection, you could ask them to put them in order from shortest to longest to reinforce their learning :-)

We compared the length of some Tuna and gingerbread people we made and arranged them from the shortest to the longest
